Yes. All students take a test on their first day so we can put them in a class with other students with a similar level of English.
20 lessons (15 hours) per week from 09:00 to 12:30, Monday to Friday.
Students study grammar, vocabulary and everyday English, but the most important thing is listening and speaking practice. We aim to build up our students’ confidence and fluency.
In 2006, we had students from 25 countries: Algeria, Belarus, Belgium, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Poland, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, Turkey and Ukraine.
See the sample programme on page two of this flyer. There are activities every afternoon and evening, plus a full-day excursion every Saturday and a half-day excursion every Wednesday afternoon. Many activities take place in the College grounds (we are situated in a 13-hectare park).
It depends on the student.
Residential (age 10-16): you’re with a big group of friends, you don’t have to spend time going to and from the College because everything’s in one place: accommodation, meals, lessons and many social activities.
Most of our dormitories have four beds, but some rooms have more.
Homestay (age 13-16): you have more independence and you experience life with a British family. Homestay students share a bedroom with one other student, or possibly two.
It depends on their parents. The College sends a Permissions Form so parents can decide if their children are allowed to go out in the afternoons and evenings. For younger students who are not allowed out alone, we have at least one organised trip to the town centre every week so they can go to the shops.
Students are met at the airport and all activities and residential accommodation is supervised according to British Council’s 1999 recommendations:
All our staff are checked with the Police to make sure they are suitable people to work with children.
Residential students can only go out of the College alone in the afternoon or evening if their parents give written permission. Homestay students have more independence, but they must be home by the following times (except when there are College activities later in the evening):
Residential students need money for the laundry (about £3.00 per wash) and everyone needs money for sweets, snacks and souvenir shopping. Maybe £25 - £50 per week plus at least £50 for emergencies. The College can act as a bank and look after the students’ money (and passport and ticket) for them.
The College has First Aid trained staff with the students at all times. If a child needs a doctor or a dentist, we will arrange this, though the child may have to pay. We strongly recommend that all students have insurance.
Gatwick £130
Heathrow £175 Stansted £255 + £15 for Park and Assist (driver checks student in with the airline on the return journey)
